Nevada Power supports a variety of educational events including competitions and expositions that help students with career awareness, course selection, and technological literacy.
Teacher of the Year Named
Nevada Power is a proud partner of the "KLUC Teacher of the Month" where students nominate teachers to be recognized for their efforts in the classroom. Gwen Baccus was selected as the 2006 Teacher of the Year, and was recognized at a surprise presentation during an assembly on March 28 at Andre Agassi Prepatory school.
Students chose Baccus, they said, because she comes to school early, works during lunch, and stays after school to help them.
Back-to-School Fairs
Every August, Nevada Power supports the many back-to-school fairs scheduled throughout the valley with fun and interactive booths. At the booths, parents, children and teachers alike learn about electrical safety, our McGruff Truck program, and Nevada Power's educational curriculum. Customers also have the opportunity to talk to utility staff and learn about conservation and the products and services Nevada Power offers.
Future City Competition
This national program promotes technological literacy and engineering to middle
school students to help foster an interest in math, science, and engineering
through hands-on, real world applications.
The last competition culminated on January 25, at Sierra Vista High School,
where finalists displayed exciting models of their Future Cities, presented
essays and received awards for their achievements.

Futures Expo
The annual Clark County School District Futures Expo bridges the
gap between future employers and students (grades 6 through 12) by
encouraging students to stay in school and obtain the skills to
make them employable. At the last expo Nevada Power booths promoted
careers in the electric utility industry and featured different
Nevada Power employees, from environmental scientists to lineman.
The students even got to see the linemen climb poles and
demonstrate the dangers of electricity.
Science Bowl
This educational outreach event allows students from Nevada, California and
Utah to display their academic expertise. In the most recent bowl, thirty-two
teams tested their knowledge in the fields of science and mathematics in a
grueling 13-round competition. The math and science department at the winner's
school received a cash prize to help purchase equipment or create college
scholarships. The winning teams also travel to the National Science Bowl in
Chevy Chase, Maryland. This Department of Energy national initiative encourages
high school students to excel in science and math and hopefully pursue careers
in those fields.
